Ecostrat and BDO Zone Initiative Adopt New Standardized Framework for BDO Zone Ratings
Ecostrat Inc. and the BDO Zone Initiative are proud to have supported the development of CSA Group’s newly published Technical Specification, CSA TS-005:25 Bioeconomy Development Opportunity (BDO) Zone Assessment.
This landmark Technical Specification is designed to help accelerate the growth of Canada’s bioeconomy by enabling the rapid scaling of BDO Zones nationwide. It provides a standardized framework for identifying the most promising regions across Canada for the development of biofuels, renewable chemicals, biogas, and biobased products.
CSA TS-005:25 establishes the first standardized protocol for quantifying “regional readiness” for biomanufacturing through the evaluation of BDO Zones. By addressing a longstanding bottleneck in the sector, the new specification delivers a uniform system for evaluating regional biomass supply chains and infrastructure capabilities essential for biomanufacturing.
The BDO Zone Initiative has already started integrating the new CSA Technical Specification into its mission to build a comprehensive network of BDO Zones across Canada. This adoption will create market transparency, direct investment toward the most competitive bio-manufacturing hubs and accelerate the expansion of the Canadian bioeconomy across multiple jurisdictions. By applying the CSA TS-005 framework for BDO Zone Assessment, Ecostrat recently issued an ’A’ Rating for Vegreville, AB. Vegreville’s BDO Zone rating for availability of biomass was a major supporting factor for Provectus Biofuels to locate their new Dobrojet Renewable Jet Fuel Project in Vegreville, an $845 million investment into the local economy.
“The release of CSA TS-005 marks an important milestone for Canada’s bioeconomy,” said Jordan Solomon, President of Ecostrat and Chairman of the BDO Zone Initiative. “This specification provides the rigorous foundation needed to support government goals of diversifying and creating new markets for our forest and agricultural communities.”

About The BDO Zone Initiative
The Biofuel Development Opportunity (BDO) Zone Initiative certifies ‘regional readiness’ for bio-manufacturing, creates global connections and ignites an influx of new energy opportunities for farmers, economic developers, and rural businesses. A BDO Zone rating is an internationally recognized, standards-based technical risk assessment of a region’s feedstock, supply chain, and infrastructure risk with respect to the development potential for new biofuel plants. BDO Zone ratings are site location bullseyes for bio-project development. Investment grade ratings are force-multipliers for attracting new manufacturing plants to the areas where they are most likely to succeed, drive investment and create jobs.
