Canton, South Dakota Issued BDO Zone 'A' Rating for Corn Stover

The Sioux Metro Growth Alliance, Ecostrat, and the BDO Zone Initiative announced that Canton, South Dakota has received a BDO Zone ‘A’ Rating — the first such rating in South Dakota — certifying 700,000 bone dry tons annually of low-risk corn stover availability across a 75-mile radius from Canton.

The ‘A’ rating indicates strong feedstock supply viability and low default risk. The region’s established corn production infrastructure and limited competing demand for corn stover ensure reliable supply within a 40-mile radius. Canton Industrial Park serves as the rated anchor site — a 20-acre shovel-ready, municipally-owned facility on widened SD Highway 18 with utilities, natural gas, water, wastewater, and fiber service. A BNSF mainline traverses the park, and lot pricing remains competitive.

Tyler Tordsen, Sioux Metro’s President & CEO, stated the region possesses “the feedstock, the producer experience, the relationships and the site-ready infrastructure to support serious biobased investment.”

USDA Rural Development State Director Lorraine Polak noted the grant funding “will be instrumental in economic development and job creation for our rural communities.”
